Bury is one of the most well connected cities in Greater Manchester, a few miles from Bolton and Rochdale, and transportation routes in the city, including the Metrolink spur.
Its name comes from an old word for village which originally meant a castle or fort burg is still the German word for a castle and it means the Bury Metropolitan Area is really rounding districts.
Burying developed as a market town with its marketplace in its center, and its importance as a trading center dates back to Roman times, with the currency of around 250 AD found in the city.

Bury played an unusual role in the War of the Roses, when wealthy local landowner Sir Thomas Pilkington, who built the castle of Bury in 1469, has chosen to support the house of York.
It ended badly after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 Richard III was killed in battle, and Sir Thomas was executed soon after, with its succession back to Thomas Stanley, the newly created Earl of Derby.
Bobby original, Sir Robert Peel, was a resident of Bury who became British Prime Minister in 1834 and again in 1841.
He was also Minister of the Interior that he presented the Metropolitan Police Act 1829 which established the modern police force in London, and patrol police are called Bobbies on the beat in his honor today.
Sir Robert died at the age of 62 in 1850, days after a serious riding accident when his horse ran over him, and memorials now stand buried in the parish church and Holcombe Hill.



Modern Bury is still an iconic center of culture in the north of England, with its Market Hall open from Monday to Saturday and outdoor market every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday too.
The market is a place to find local delicacies and specialties, with a booth run by the famous Bury Black Pudding Company and an advisor Tripe list of Tripe Marketing Board as one of the main places for offal.
For those of a gentler disposition, is also known for its unique Bury on the traditional recipe for the cake Simnel cake with layers of fruit with almond paste, which in the city is usually seen with eleven iced decorative balls on top.
