The Japanese and German automakers dominate the list of safest cars United States
WASHINGTON A U Security Group said Japanese automakers and German dominated the list of the safest vehicles on American roads, in part by adding advanced technology to prevent frontal collisions.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a group funded by industry which goads automakers in building safer cars by granting influential ratings, said Thursday that Toyota Motor Corp. 7203 T tops the list 48 Top Safety Pick 2016 9 winners, which included the Camry, the best-selling car US.
Another 13 qualified for the second most prestigious on the list, which is known as the Top Safety Pick The prices, often used in car advertising, follow stricter criteria for the safety standards this year than in the past.
The announcement IIHS comes just days after the US auto security authorities Tuesday unveiled a major overhaul proposed safety crash tests that will require automakers to add new vehicles to accident prevention technologies if they want to win the top, five-star.
The U S National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers three new ratings for cars and trucks on pedestrian safety, accident prevention and solvency accidents under its new car assessment program.
The proposal NHTSA would push carmakers to add advanced technologies such as IIHS calls to get the best grades.
Honda Motor Co 7267 T was second with eight winners will be announced by the IIHS, followed by Volkswagen AG with seven winners and Subaru Motor Co T 9778 with six awards.
In order to get the best rating IIHS, automakers must have a frontal collision prevention system with automatic braking capabilities to avoid a rear crash Vehicles must stop or slow down without driver before hitting a target in tests 12 or 25 miles per hour, said IIHS.
U Of S nameplates, only Chrysler Fiat Chrysler Automobile NV 200 received the Top Safety Pick, as his Fiat 500X.
IIHS said 2016 winners are as well in tougher offset crash tests Over 20 winners of Top Safety Pick from last year are ineligible to 2016.
As vehicles continue to improve, however, we believe it is important to recognize that progress and encourage further progress in making our stringent assessments, Adrian Lund of the IIHS president said.
For the first time, NHTSA will base assessments of crash tests for vehicles if the manufacturer has included some accident prevention technologies.
The new assessments will come into force in the year 2019 model.
