Throughout the years, many men have made the transition from the football field soccer squared circle Perhaps none, however, have already done with the panache of a Sylvester Ritter, a man known to fans sports entertainment like Junkyard Dog.
Before entering the ring, the nearly 300 books Ritter was a college football player standout, winning twice honorable mention All-American honors at the University of Fayetteville NC State It was even drafted by the Packers of Green Bay, but decided on a career in sports entertainment in the mid-1970s.
JYD debuted in Tennessee in 1977 and also worked for the promotion of the famous fight Stampede Stu Hart in Calgary, Alberta, Canada Ritter used several different ring names early in his career, but it would really become an icon after moving to the Mid-South wrestling territory in early 1980.
It was mid-South where Bill Watts christened Ritter promoter such as Junkyard Dog JYD began coming to the ring with his dog collar signature and chains, and was perhaps the Superstar the most popular on the territory shortly Despite his massive frame, JYD was abnormally quick on his feet and extremely durable, often seeming insensitive to pain, and he connected with fans almost instantly his rivalry with Ted DiBiase, the Fabulous Freebirds and Butch Reed - among others - were among the most legendary Mid-South, and along the way he amassed numerous reigns as Mid-South north American Champion and Mid-South Tag Team Champion.
Towards the end of 1984, JYD came to WWE, and once again, it became an instant hit with fans the sight of JYD wearing his collar and chains, strode to the ring to the strains of its unforgettable entrance theme, grab a cake was that our fans have loved but feared his opponents he was well known for his final maneuver, a powerslam he called Thump so monumental that was the word on the Thump back of his wrestling singlet - and its vicious head shots.
Although he never won a championship in WWE, JYD had some success while remaining one of the most popular Superstars 1980, just months after his debut, he faced Greg Valentine for Intercontinental championship at the inaugural WrestleMania, defeating the Hammer by account- but not win the gold later this year, JYD won the first Wrestling Classic, a King of the ring tournament style which was also the first foray into the Pay- per-view WWE Two years later, JYD engaged in a rivalry with King Harley Race on the crown which resulted in a fight at WrestleMania III.
The success of Junkyard Dog continued after leaving WWE, as he moved to the NWA later WCW in the late 1980s and briefly fought with Ric Flair on the World Championship NWA He also held the WCW Six-Man tag Team Championship in 1991 before retiring from the ring in 1993.
Unfortunately, Sylvester Ritter's life was tragically short 2 June 1998 while driving home from his daughter LaToya top graduating from school diploma in North Carolina, Ritter was involved in an accident involving a single vehicle on a Mississippi highway that claimed his life, he was only 45 years old.
In 2004, Junkyard Dog was posthumously the biggest bones of all when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame along with 10 of his contemporaries, including rivals Valentine WWE Race Fellow Hall of Famer Ernie Ladd himself one of the largest African-American superstars of the 1970s inducted JYD into the room with his daughter LaToya Ritter fittingly accepting the induction on his behalf.
Junkyard Dog had a unique combination of power, grace and charisma that is rarely seen in sports entertainment inside the ring, his bite was certainly just as powerful as his bark a fact that many of its rivals will attest and as member of the Hall of fame, his legacy will never be forgotten by fans of sports entertainment.
