Carciotti Palace

The milliner - Angela Monica Cacciotti



Commissioned by the wealthy Greek merchant Demetrio textile Carciotti the building was built between 1798 and 1805 based on the project by Matteo Pertsch 1769 1837 architect of German origin who studied in the lively cultural environment of the Brera Academy and the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma.
The neo-classical style of the building reflects not only the identity of the Commissioner, but also the architecture reference model of that time the great classic French tradition.
Designed as a large plant without saving accommodate the owner's house, as well as warehouses, barns and deposits, it occupies much of rectangular 40 100 m that develops around four courtyards.
The main fa ade facing the banks, is characterized by a forehearth five sections divided by six Ionic fluted columns, supporting a balustrade with six allegorical statues Portunus, Thyche, Athena, Fama Apollo Abundantia made by Antonio Bosa follower of Canova s.


Behind the loft increases the cylindrical drum which supports the dome-coated copper plates according to the architect Giovanni Righetti it had the function of an observatory, on top of which is Napoleon eagle.
All the architectural elements are Istrian stone material that confers monumentality and prestige in anyway ade.
The composition of the main fa ade is repeated in a rear, but with half columns and four Thypsis statues, Mercury, Poseidon, Odysseus, the first two by Bosa other by Bartolomeo Augustini.
Inside, after the entry in which two sculptures are placed Hercules and Minerva, the main monumental staircase in Carrara marble with three other statues, Sculpture and Architecture leads to the master apartments through a large double height room round with 16 monolithic columns and Giuseppe Bernardino Bison frescoes with scenes from the Iliad and the Odyssey.
Designed by Carciotti for his only male heirs, in 1831, the building became the first headquarters of the Generali insurance, then the Austro-Hungarian Bank Allied military government and possibly Port Authority It currently belongs to the municipality.
